Diversity Team Minutes
Honoring Culture:
Janet Tran reported about this year's Honoring Culture Campagin
- Carson will send artwork after completing our own display March 1-20
- Artwork finalists displayed at the Puyallup Spring Fair April 16-19
- All artwork submissions should have label on the back including Student Name, Teacher Name, and Reach Read-a-loud book title inspiring the work
- Performing groups for fair are also encouraged
Teachers should begin doing the read-a-louds with their classes. Teachers should be sure to document their completion of the read-a-loud in the binder they check out from Amber.
MIX It Up @ Lunch:
Sarah Simon shared about an event we could host on Nov. 13th during lunch to encourage students mixing it up with other kids at lunch. Ideas to organize and support the event include:
- CNN promo broadcast on channel 74
- Connect with Olweus anti-bullying and anti-harassment class meeting topic
- Run Powerpoint in Commons during lunch with pictures or topics for discussion during the mix-it-up lunch for table talk
- Give kids a paper brick to build a brick wall in advance of the event. Determine a system for having students remove bricks to "break down the wall of intolerance."
Discussed concern about student response to school election once candidate is chosen. Plan is to educate students on appropriate response to our event as well as discuss need to rally behind a candidate once the election is complete. This will be accomplished via hourly CNN updates on our election day.
Future meetings:
It was agreed to move our monthly meetings to Thursday afternoons to allow for all members to attend and for Janet to provide monthly reports from ODA. To view meeting dates, please consult Google calendar.
