"Families" book is in the library. Book is openly available for checkout. Not intended as a REACH read-alloud but for genreal use. Has been controversial at some locations. Depicts various family structures including a couple of same gender families. School focus is to show respect for varying family structures but not take a stance or make intentional effort to teach about all possible family structures.
Diversity Day update. Committee members agreed to check in with Cert staff about their proposed topics for the Diversity Day lessons. Many slots are still open. Staff will be asked to discuss as teams and fill in sign-up sheet at next week's staff meeting.Also, Janet has found a catalog with bracelets to use for our "Giveaway" at the end of the Diversity Day celebration. We can use remaining $294 from 6th grade fund to purchase the bracelets. We also discussed a gift idea for all of the community volunteers. Agreed to research a certificate and special pin or other item to give each volunteeer.
Honoring Cultures--Janet reviewed updated info with us. Plans on sharing details out with staff at Wed. staff meeting re. timelines and items to be displayed
Cultural Competence posters--Gerald passed out a small poster that nicely illustrates definition of cultural competency. Janet will follow up to see if we can get copies for classroom use.
Discipline data--We are still awaiting more specific data to review for Carson regarding correlations between race and discipline referrals. Hopefully more data will come soon, but either way will integrate staff discussion into March Pro Dev at Carson.
Concern was raised that some staff are experiencing financial hardships for providing treats at staff meetings and for celebration luncheons. Will pass topic along to Sunshine committee to consider.
