Diversity Committee Meeting

Culture & the Arts
The PACK Leadership Team gave the ok to go for the silver level. Linda Belt came and talked to Arturo and Andrea about options for culture enrichment training for Carson’s staff. We will have training that will be focused on Native American Culture or training that will focus on incorporating the Arts in the classroom. This training, which may take up to 3 hours, will be scheduled for December’s PR Day or a date early January.
Diversity Rep Report/Janet Tran
President Obama’s gave an anti-bullying speech on You Tube. Our staff will be given the opportunity to view this video. Intermediate teachers may want to show the video to their students.
REACH Kits
Beth Bestrom reported that there are 15 kits that teachers can use to compliment their REACH lessons. These kits can be checked out for at least a week from the Karshner Museum. One REACH lesson should be taught each semester. We will make room on our agenda on our January PR day to talk about the components of two of the kits and learn more about how they can be used.
BEAD Project & Fund Raiser
The Bead Project will take place at Karshner on December 16, 2010 from 3:30-8:00pm.
Colorful jewelry made by women in Uganda will be available for purchase. The purpose of this fund raiser is to help eradicate poverty for the people of Uganda.
Diversity Celebration
Janet applied for a COP grant and mailed it in last week. We requested $1000 for Carson’s Diversity Celebration.
Cultural Enrichment Classes
Linda, Peggy, Janet and Lindsay went to a Hawaiian Culture Day class at the Karshner Museum on October 26th. This was one of the series of culturally focused workshops that will take place through March of next year. Trainings for the rest of the year will be announced on Carson’s blog. The staff can also learn more about the workshop themes on the Professional Development website.
